Vitamins
Vitamins are essential for good health. the body cannot manufacture vitamins and must depend on food to supply them. Vitamins are named by letters or by their chemical names.
Vitamin A is found in green and yellow plants and in liver-fish oils. It is neccessary for healthy skin and bones.
Vitamin B1, also called thiamin, is found in whole-grain cereals and in meat. It is neccessary for the use of starches and sugars by the body.
Vitamin B2, or riboflavin, is essential for a number of complicated chemical reactions that take place during the body's use of food. It is found in liver, milk, and vegetables.
Vitamin B12 and folic acid are needed for the formation of red blood cells and the proper funtion of the nerves. Vitamin B12 is found in animal products, especially liver. Folic acid is present in leafy, green and yellow vegetables.
Vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid, is found in fruit- especially oranges and lemons, and in potatoes. It is needed for the maintenance of the ligaments, tendons, and other supportive tissue.
Vitamin D, is present in eggs, fish=liver oil, and liver. It is also formed when the skin is exposed to the sun. Vitamin D is neccessary for the use of calcium by the body.
Vitamin E is manufactured by bacteria in the intestine. It is neccessary for proper clotting of the blood.
Niacin is neccessary for respiration of the cells. It is present in liver, yeast, lean meat, and some vegetables.
Pantothenic acid, pyridoxin, are other vitamins that play a role in chemical reactions in the body. small amounts os these vitamins are found in many kinds of food.
Water plays a vital role in the health of the body, but it is often considered seperately from nutrients. Enough water is essential for a good varied diet.

What is a Vitamin?
A Vitamin is a complex substance that is essential to the human body for health and growth.
But human beings do not need vitamins for fuel. Fuel is supplied by fats and carbohydrates. The human body makes some vitamins itself, but often in amounts too small to meet its needs. Others are not made
in the body at all, and must be supplied. All the functions of many of the vitamins are not completely known. But doctors do know that vitamins have specific uses that one cannot replace, or act for another.
The continued lack of one vitamin in an otherwise complete diet may result in a deficiency disease,
such as rickets, scurvy, and pellagra.

The best way to obtain vitamins is to eat foods in which they occur naturally. There are also preparations
of pure vitamins that contain a single vitamin, or a combination of several vitamins.
